What is Accelerated Reader?

Accelerated Reader is a research based computerized program that assesses student's reading on the basis of comprehension.  Each student receives a reading level range in order to determine which books are appropriate reading materials for their ability.  To determine this level, students take a computerized assessment (STAR) that increases and/or decreases in complexity depending on the individual's ability.  Once the reading level is determined and goals are set, students can begin reading from the designated leveled books located in our library, AR books from the public library, or books from home that have AR tests.  You can check our Quizlist on our web site to determine level and points.  Upon completion of reading a book, students are to take a computerized comprehension quiz at school in their own classroom.  To accurately test a student's comprehension of literature, the quiz should be taken within 24-48 hours of reading the book.

What are the School-Wide Expectations?

Mesa Elementary continues to display high expectations for the academic learning and progress of their students.  Students must display responsibility for learning by coming to school prepared to take a quiz.  Please make sure your child reviews for each comprehension quiz they take by summarizing the story events and important information.  Students will not be allowed to take quizzes on books read the previous year, books outside of their designated level,  or from watching movies based on literature selections.

What are the School-Wide Incentives?

The goal for 2007-08 is 42,000 points.  There will be an award for each 9 weeks that the students are on track with the goal, and there is a huge reward at the end of the year for meeting the goal.

1st Nine Weeks—10,500 points—Pajama Day
2nd Nine Weeks—10,500 points—Movies and Popcorn Day
3rd Nine Weeks—10,500 points—School wide BINGO/Game Day
4th Nine Weeks—10,500 points—Total—42,000 points--Renaissance Celebration!  Outside Inflatable Games, Clowns, Fun!

The complete AR quiz list is also available online!  Books don’t have to be in our library.  They can be from the public library or books you have at home.  Our students now have access to nearly 100,000 AR quizzes.  You can also retrieve this at home or at our library.
